PREFACE — ÖNSÖZ

Action! Camera! — Kamera Hazır!

The summer break had just started. A minibus with the words "NATURE EXPLORERS CREW" painted on the side pulled up outside a school in Istanbul.

Inside the minibus, three young journalists were getting ready. Camera bags, notebooks, microphones — everything was packed.

Then the sliding door opened and a tall woman stepped out. She was wearing a green jacket and carrying a silver camera. This was Dr. Naz — the team's wildlife expert and camera director.

Dr. Naz: Good morning, team! Are you all ready?

Kerem (excited, 13): Ready! I've been up since 5 a.m.!

Selin (calm, 13): I've written down everything we need. I've even got a list of the animals.

Kerem was the team's cameraman. He was always running, always filming. Selin was the writer — she kept detailed notes in her green reporter's notebook.

The New Team Member — Yeni Ekip Üyesi

Dr. Naz looked at her camera and then — she looked directly at you.

Dr. Naz: Wait. I think there's someone missing from this team. Who's reading this page right now?

The Data Wall / Veri Duvarı

The team set up camp. Dr. Naz pinned large cards to the tent wall. Each card had numbers about an animal — weight, speed, length.

Dr. Naz: A good documentary isn't just "that's a big elephant." We need to compare. We say: the elephant is bigger than the rhino. The cheetah is faster than the lion.

Selin: Oh! That's comparatives! We use -er and "more" in English.

Kerem: And superlatives! The biggest, the fastest!

Dr. Naz: Exactly. Now let's build your grammar files.

CHAPTER 3

Survival Stories — Hayatta Kalma Hikayeleri

🐆 Third Stop — Third Letter: T

Dawn on the Savanna / Savanada Şafak

It was 5 a.m. Dr. Naz woke the team up before sunrise. The air was cool and quiet. In the distance, something moved through the tall grass.

Dr. Naz (whispering): A cheetah. Watch carefully. What does it do every morning?

Selin (notebook open, whispering): It hunts. It searches for food.

Dr. Naz: Good. And how do we describe that in English? Do we say "it is hunting right now" or "it hunts every morning"?

Good question. This is the difference between the present continuous and the present simple. And in nature documentaries, we almost always use present simple for facts.

Present Simple for Facts / Gerçekler İçin Geniş Zaman

📖 PRESENT SIMPLE FOR FACTS / GERÇEKLER İÇİN GENİŞ ZAMAN:
We use the present simple to describe things that are always true or happen regularly. / Her zaman doğru olan veya düzenli gerçekleşen şeyler için geniş zaman kullanırız.

✅ "The cheetah runs very fast." — Her zaman geçerli bir gerçek.
✅ "Elephants eat plants." — Genel bir gerçek.
✅ "A lion sleeps up to 20 hours a day." — Bilimsel gerçek.

⚠️ He/She/It → add -s / 3. tekil şahıs → -s eklenir
run → runs  |  eat → eats  |  live → lives

Animal Facts — Present Simple in Action

Fact SentenceTürkçe Çeviri
The lion lives in the savanna.Aslan savanada yaşar.
Elephants eat grass and leaves.Filler ot ve yaprak yer.
A cheetah runs at 120 km/h.Çita saatte 120 km hızla koşar.
Crocodiles live near rivers.Timsahlar nehir kenarında yaşar.
The giraffe has a very long neck.Zürafanın çok uzun boynu vardır.
Sharks do not breathe air.Köpek balıkları hava solumaz.
Eagles fly very high.Kartallar çok yüksek uçar.

Question Form / Soru Cümlesi

📖 QUESTIONS WITH PRESENT SIMPLE / GENİŞ ZAMANDA SORU:

Do / Does + subject + verb?

• Do lions eat meat? — Aslanlar et yer mi?
• Does the giraffe live in the ocean? — Zürafa okyanusta mı yaşar?
• Where does the tiger live? — Kaplan nerede yaşar?
• What do elephants eat? — Filler ne yer?

Answer form: Yes, it does. / No, it doesn't. / Yes, they do. / No, they don't.

Negative Form / Olumsuz Cümle

📖 NEGATIVES WITH PRESENT SIMPLE / GENİŞ ZAMANDA OLUMSUZ:

Subject + do not (don't) / does not (doesn't) + verb

• Lions don't live in the jungle. — Aslanlar ormanda yaşamaz.
• The shark doesn't eat plants. — Köpek balığı bitki yemez.
• Penguins don't live in Africa. — Penguenler Afrika'da yaşamaz.

⚠️ COMMON MISTAKE / SIK YAPILAN HATA:
❌ The cheetah don't live in mountains. (wrong!)
✅ The cheetah doesn't live in mountains.

He/She/It → always use doesn't, not "don't"! / 3. tekil şahısla her zaman "doesn't" kullan!

The Cheetah Documentary / Çita Belgeseli

Dr. Naz switched on the camera. Kerem crouched low in the grass. They were filming a cheetah mother and her three cubs.

Dr. Naz (narrating quietly for the documentary): The cheetah is the fastest land animal on Earth. It lives in the grasslands of Africa and parts of Asia. A mother cheetah usually has two to four cubs. She teaches her cubs to hunt when they are about six months old. Unlike lions, cheetahs do not roar — they chirp and purr like large cats.

Selin (whispering to Kerem): Did you hear that? They chirp!

Kerem: Incredible! I'm getting this on camera!

🤯 INCREDIBLE BUT TRUE: Cheetahs are the only big cats that cannot roar! Instead, they make a high-pitched sound called a "chirp." / Çitalar miyavlar ve cıvıldar — kükreyemezler!

Q&A with Dr. Naz / Dr. Naz ile Soru-Cevap

That evening around the campfire, Dr. Naz answered questions from the team.

Kerem: Dr. Naz, do crocodiles really go without food for months?

Dr. Naz: Yes, they do! A crocodile's metabolism is very slow. It can survive for up to a year without eating — if it has to.

Selin: Does the elephant really never forget?

Dr. Naz: Elephants have excellent memories, yes. They remember other elephants and places for many years. Scientists believe they even grieve for their dead.

You (the reader): Do tigers live alone?

Dr. Naz: Yes! Tigers are solitary animals. They live and hunt alone — except for mothers with cubs. Now write that as a fact sentence: "The tiger..."

Split image: left side shows a lush green forest with animals; right side shows the same place as a polluted wasteland — grey skies, litter, bare stumps. In the centre: Dr. Naz holds a before-and-after photo and looks at the camera with a serious expression.

A Different Kind of Story / Farklı Bir Hikaye

Three days into the trip, the team drove to a river that Dr. Naz had filmed ten years ago. She had an old photograph — blue water, green banks, flamingos wading in the shallows.

But when the minibus stopped, Kerem's face fell.

Kerem: This... this is the same river?

The water was dark brown. Plastic bottles, old tyres, and foam cups floated on the surface. The flamingos were gone.

Dr. Naz: This is why we came here. Not just to film beautiful animals. We film the truth. And today, the truth is: our planet is in danger.

Selin (writing in her notebook): Then we need to learn the words to talk about this. Properly.

The Final Documentary Clip / Son Belgesel Klibi

Dr. Naz turned the camera on one last time.

Dr. Naz (to camera): This is what we have learned on our journey: wild animals are remarkable, but fragile. Our planet is extraordinary, but threatened. And the most powerful tool for change — is knowledge. You now have that knowledge. Use it.

Kerem (standing straight, serious for once): I used to think documentaries were just cool videos. Now I understand — they make people care.

Selin (reading from her notebook): "The cheetah is the fastest land animal. The elephant is the biggest. The blue whale is the largest creature ever. But all of them depend on one thing: a healthy planet. And that is our responsibility."

Dr. Naz: Cut. Perfect. That goes in the film.

CONGRATULATIONS!

You Did It — Başardın!

You have reached the final pages of Nature Reporter — Wild Animals & Environment. This is not the end of your journey. It is the beginning.

Dr. Naz (smiling into the camera): Every journey starts with one step. You took hundreds of steps through this book. You learned, you practised, you made mistakes, and you kept going. That is what a real reporter does.

Selin: I filled 47 pages of my notebook on this trip. How much did YOU write?

Kerem: I filmed 11 hours of footage. The best moment? When I finally got the comparative sentences right. (He grins.) The cheetah is faster than the lion. The lion is more powerful than the cheetah. BOTH are the most amazing animals I've ever seen.

🏅 FINAL BADGE: NATURE REPORTER CHAMPION!

A Message from the Team / Ekipten Bir Mesaj

Kerem: You know what? At the start of this book I thought "English is just for tests." Now I think: English is for talking to the world. About real things. About animals. About the planet. That's worth it.

Selin: Learning a language is like filling a notebook. One word, one sentence, one page at a time. You've filled a lot of pages. Don't stop.

Dr. Naz: The world needs more people who observe carefully, ask good questions, and speak up. In English. In Turkish. In any language. Be that person.

🤯 FINAL FACT: There are about 8.7 million species on Earth. Only 1.2 million have been scientifically described. There is still SO much to discover. / Dünya'da yaklaşık 8,7 milyon tür var. Yalnızca 1,2 milyonu bilimsel olarak tanımlandı. Keşfedilecek çok şey var!

Modal Story — Dr. Naz's Rules

Before entering the nature reserve, Dr. Naz gave the team a briefing. Selin wrote everything in her notebook.

Dr. Naz: First rule — you must stay on the path. If you leave it, you could disturb nesting birds.

Dr. Naz: Second — you mustn't feed the animals. Ever. Not even the cute ones. Especially the cute ones.

Kerem (looking at a small antelope nearby): But it's SO CUTE...

Dr. Naz: No. Feeding wild animals makes them dependent on humans. You should respect their wildness. That's the most important thing.

Selin (writing): You must. You mustn't. You should. Got it. I'm putting this in my story.

Award Ceremony / Ödül Töreni

Dr. Naz cleared her throat and stood in front of the camera one last time. Behind her: a stunning sunset over the savanna, golden light, silhouettes of elephants at the waterhole.

Dr. Naz: Nature reporting is not just a job. It is a responsibility. Every time you choose to learn — about an animal, about the environment, about how to express something in another language — you are becoming a better citizen of this world.

Selin: I'm going to keep this notebook forever. Forty-seven pages of everything we learned.

Kerem: And I'm going to make a real documentary one day. About animals. About climate. In English.

Dr. Naz (looking at YOU): And you — Nature Reporter — what will YOU do next?

🏅 TO THE READER / OKUYUCUYA:
The journey doesn't end here. Every word you learned is a tool. Use your tools. / Her öğrendiğin kelime bir araçtır. Araçlarını kullan.

🌿 The wild is waiting. / Doğa bekliyor.

Kerem Finds a Clue / Kerem Bir İpucu Buluyor

Kerem walked ahead on the trail and suddenly stopped. He crouched down and pointed at something in the dust.

Kerem: Dr. Naz! Come look — tracks! Big ones.

Dr. Naz (studying them): Good eye, Kerem. Round track, no claws visible. That means a cat. A big cat. And look at the size — this is not a cheetah or a leopard.

Selin: A lion? Are lions active during the day?

Dr. Naz: Actually, lions are most active at dusk and dawn. During the heat of the day, they rest. But they can move when they need to. Everyone — stay close.

🧪 VOCABULARY: Animal Tracks / Hayvan İzleri
tracks / pawprints = ayak izleri
claws = pençe / tırnaklar
dusk = alacakaranlık (gün batımı)
dawn = şafak (gün doğumu)

A Day in the Life / Bir Günlük Yaşam

Dr. Naz filmed herself describing the day of a single lion from sunrise to sunset. She used only present simple — because this is how a lion ALWAYS lives.

📋 DR. NAZ'S LION NARRATION:

"At dawn, the lion wakes. The pride is still sleeping in the shade of a tree. She stretches and yawns — yes, she yawns just like we do.
She doesn't eat in the morning. Lions often wait until evening to hunt. She drinks at the waterhole first. Then she grooms her cub — she licks its fur clean with her rough tongue.
Around midday, the heat is intense. She sleeps again — up to 20 hours a day in total.
At dusk, she stirs. She scans the horizon. The wildebeests are moving. Tonight, she hunts."

Selin: Did you notice? Every verb was present simple. Drink. Sleep. Wake. Hunt. These are facts about lions — true every day.

Ocean Pollution — Okyanus Kirliliği

The team watched a video on the laptop. Dr. Naz had filmed it herself, two years ago — underwater footage from the sea near Istanbul.

Kerem (quietly): I can see plastic bags. They look like jellyfish.

Dr. Naz: That's exactly the problem. Sea turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish. They eat them. And they die.

Selin: So when someone throws a plastic bag in the sea — an animal dies because of that one bag?

Dr. Naz: It's not that simple. But yes — plastic causes immense damage. It doesn't disappear. It breaks into smaller and smaller pieces. Microplastics.

📖 PLASTIC POLLUTION / PLASTİK KİRLİLİĞİ:
• single-use plastic = tek kullanımlık plastik (bags, bottles, straws)
• microplastics = mikroplastikler (<5mm)
• plastic patch / island = plastik ada (huge ocean areas)

The School Eco Club / Okul Eko Kulübü

Back in Istanbul, the team visited a school that had its own eco club. A 13-year-old student named Zeynep explained what they do.

Zeynep: We have a compost bin in the school garden. All the food waste from the canteen goes in. After two months, it becomes compost — natural fertiliser for our plants.

Selin: That's impressive! And do other students participate?

Zeynep: We have campaigns. We put posters everywhere: "You should use both sides of your paper." "You mustn't leave the taps running." Things like that.

Kerem: So basically — you're doing everything we've been learning in this book.

Zeynep: (smiling) Exactly. Because someone has to.

Selin's Campaign Article / Selin'in Kampanya Makalesi

📋 SELIN'S ARTICLE FOR THE SCHOOL NEWSPAPER:

"SAVE OUR RIVERS — ACT NOW!"

Did you know that 80% of the world's wastewater flows back into the environment without being treated? Every day, thousands of animals die because of water pollution.

The situation in our town is no different. According to local scientists, our river's fish population has dropped by 60% in the last 20 years. This is the worst it has ever been.

What should we do? First, we should all recycle our plastic waste. Second, we must stop buying single-use plastic. Factories must not release chemicals into rivers — this is illegal and dangerous.

The river was once the most beautiful part of our town. We can make it beautiful again. But we must act now."

🎬 THE FINAL FRAME / SON KARE
A single, beautiful panel. Sunrise over the African savanna. The Nature Explorers minibus is parked on a hill. Dr. Naz, Kerem, and Selin stand together watching the horizon. In the foreground, large letters are embedded in the landscape: N · A · T · U · R · E. Animals of all kinds are gathered around — lion, elephant, eagle, dolphin (leaping in the distance), penguin, and many more. The sky is gold and orange. One empty space in the team silhouette — that is YOUR spot.
